A Sheltered Community

Social isolation and resulting loneliness are common later in life. Social housing, such as sheltered housing, may help to counter the problem of chronic loneliness brought on by social isolation. Sheltered housing is built for the needs of older people who want to enjoy their independence but who may need a little bit of support.

This project, undertaken for photography HND, portrays a number of residents of a sheltered housing complex. Older people have a life history and experiences that leave traces on their personal expression and their environment. Engaging with these wonderful people demonstrates that, for this group of individuals, sheltered housing provides individual space, support and a strong sense of community.
